Southfield Site – A Simple Overview
The Southfield Site is 12.38 acres of land that the museum purchased around 15 years ago, which has been slowly developed since the acquisition. This is where Hangar 2 (the 2,400 sq metre Heritage Lottery Fund project) was constructed in 2003/4.
During the last eighteen months the museum has been investigating the provision of more facilities alongside the Hangar 2 and this is what is known as the Southfield Site Visitor Centre Project. Broadly speaking this will include the following items in a single building:
Education / lecture area
Archive / library / research areas
Improved small object display areas
Shop
Café / seating areas
Toilets
A significant part of the project involves the museum entrance area eventually being relocated so it comes directly off Drove Lane. This aspect will include improved infrastructure / car parking areas that will allow dual use for events like the Outdoor Aeroboot, Cockpit-Fest and temporary aircraft display areas for Photo Shoot events.
The floor area of the Southfield Site Visitor Centre will occupy approximately 700 sq metres of space. To give people a bit of an idea of size that is just under one third of the floor area occupied by Hangar 2.
